5 statistics on US health insurance coverage through Q1 2017

The National Center for Health Statistics released updated health insurance estimates for the first quarter of fiscal year 2017.

Here's what you should know:

1. Approximately 28.1 million Americans were uninsured in the first quarter of 2017.

2. Among adults between 18 years and 64 years old, 12.1 percent were uninsured, while 18.9 percent had public coverage and 70.5 percent had private health insurance.

3. Among privately insured adults, 4.8 percent or 9.8 million of those plans were obtained through ACA established exchanges.

4. Concerning children between 0 years and 17 years, 5.3 percent were uninsured, 42.3 percent had public coverage and 54.1 percent had private coverage.

5. The percentage of Americans enrolled in high-deductible health plans increased from 29.4 percent in 2016 to 42.3 percent in the first quarter of 2017.
