Study shows endometriosis education and awareness is lacking — 4 observations

Despite statistics showing one in 10 women have endometriosis, a recent study stressed women often don't receive proper education or treatment.

Here are four things to know:

1. Less than one-third of women accurately recognize endometriosis' symptoms. Two-thirds of women know someone with endometriosis but rarely speak about pelvic pain with friends or family.

2. Out of the 219 respondents who identified themselves as having endometriosis, 42 percent were told by healthcare professionals that the pain was "part of being a woman"; another 47 percent report healthcare professionals described their pain as "normal."

3. The survey was conducted as part of the "Get in the Know about ME in EndoMEtriosis" campaign between Dec. 7, 2016 and Feb. 6, 2017 to promote disease awareness. The survey was conducted in the U.S. among 1,211 women over the age of 18 and 352 healthcare professionals.

4. March is endometriosis awareness month.
