Monthly gastroenterologist feedback positively impacts colonoscopy quality, study says

A study, published in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, examined how feedback impacted quality measures.

Suryakanth Gurudu, MD, of the Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, and colleagues reviewed 3,420 screening colonoscopies between October 2010 and December 2012. Quality indicators such as adenoma detection rate were included in the colonoscopy data.

Sixteen gastroenterologists provided feedback to the endoscopists at different times:

  • 555 received preintervention feedback
  • 1,209 received quarterly feedback
  • 599 received monthly feedback
  • 1,057 received postintervention feedback

Here's what they found:

1. ADR improved from 30.5 percent to 37.7 percent overall.

2. Monthly feedback elicited the greatest quality improvement. Quarterly feedback did not improve quality indicators over the preinterventional feedback period.

Researchers concluded, "In our quality improvement program, monthly feedback significantly improved colonoscopy quality measures, including ADR, while quarterly feedback did not. ... Results were durable up to 6 months following the intervention."
