Washington State Medical Association CEO: Why healthcare needs physician leaders

The healthcare field's growing list of challenges poses new opportunities for physicians who can take on more leadership positions, according to an article Jennifer Hanscom published in Forbes. Ms. Hanscom is the CEO of the Washington State Medical Association and a Physicians Foundation board member.

With their clinical background, physician leaders are well versed in how healthcare can meet patient needs. They can be advocates for their peers, patients as well as communities at large. Ms. Hanscom says physicians "experience both the culture of patient care as well as the culture of business." In this role, they have to weigh both what is best for the patient as well as how they can bolster their practice's bottom line. Physicians can ensure all decisions work to improve patient outcomes and deliver more efficient care.

Physicians may need to learn skills that make for a strong leader. Physicians Foundation offers a course for those looking to enhance their leadership skills. The class can provide training on areas including coaching, operations management, state and national policy as well as quality and performance measures, among others.

Physician leaders in healthcare today should have a good understanding of the business side of care as well as how they can influence changes in the healthcare field. To mold healthcare's future, the industry needs strong physician leaders who can bring their own experience to make crucial decisions essential to patient-centered care.
