Although anesthesiologists had the highest average salary in 2018, their employment numbers were far surpassed by other specialists, according to Quartz.
Quartz's report was based on 2018 data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Employment Statistics survey, which is conducted every other year.
Total employment for the highest-paying jobs in 2018:
1. Anesthesiologists: 31,060
2. General surgeons: 34,390
3. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons: 4,830
4. OB-GYNs: 18,590
5. Orthodontists: 5,350
6. Psychiatrists: 25,630
7. Family and general practitioners: 114,130
8. Physicians and surgeons (other specialists): 389,180
9. Chief executives: 195,530
10. General internists: 37,820
