Proposed anesthesia payments for 2020 — 3 things to know

Anesthesia providers could be reimbursed less for acute pain services in 2020, according to Anesthesia Business Consultants President and CEO Tony Mira.

Three things to know:

1. If CMS finalizes the proposed Medicare Physician Fee Schedule for 2020, as is, somatic nerve blocks will generally pay less next year, but most epidural block and catheter codes will pay slightly more.

2. There will be minimal-to-moderate payment reductions in three commonly used block/catheter services:

  • 4415 – Interscalene (brachial plexus), single
  • 64446 – Sciatic, continuous
  • 64447 – Femoral, single

3. The CPT code for ultrasonic guidance for needle placement will not change in the facility or non-facility settings.
