Proposed fee schedule has minimal changes for anesthesiologists — 5 takeaways

CMS' Proposed Medicare Physician Fee Schedule for 2020 won't change much for the average anesthesia practice, according to Anesthesia Business Consultants President and CEO Tony Mira.

Five takeaways from Mr. Mira:

1. CMS proposed a "fractional" increase to the anesthesia conversion factor for 2020.

2. Relative value unit adjustments to the anesthesia code set will have a negligible effect on anesthesiology payments.

3. Chronic pain providers could see a 1 percent payment increase because of RVU adjustments.

4. There are no new or revised codes specific to anesthesia.

5. The rule does propose revising and adding pain procedure codes. Certain somatic nerve injections could be paid less in 2020.
