Primary care beats surgical organizations in safe injection practices — 4 quick facts

Eighty-four percent of surgical organizations followed national guidelines for safe injection practices, compared to 98 percent of primary care organizations, according to a study discussed at the 2018 Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology conference.

Here are four quick facts, as reported by ContagionLive:

1. The 2017 national ambulatory safe injection practices study involved 20 primary care organizations and 90 surgical/procedural care organizations, including ambulatory care and office-based surgery.

2. Primary care organizations also performed better on proper medication storage and preparation.

3. Surgical organizations performed better on single-use medication disposal.

4. Training, ongoing risk assessments and national SIP assessments could help reduce deficiencies across both ambulatory surgical and primary care settings, according to the two members of the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care Institute for Quality Improvement who discussed the study.
