The Joint Commission revises TJR advanced certification requirements: 2 new rules for ASCs

The Joint Commission revised two elements of performance related to the total hip and total knee replacement advanced certification.

Here are four things to know:

1. The requirements apply to ASCs, hospitals and critical access hospitals participating in the total hip and total knee replacement advanced certification in the disease-specific care program.

2. The DSDF.3, EP 2 revision requires ASCs to have patient selection criteria to identify patients who can be safely discharged 23 hours after surgery. Examples of criteria include age, body mass index, current health condition, medical history, caregiver support and home environment.

3. The DSPM.4, EP 2 revision requires organizations to join a national registry and use registry data to evaluate and improve processes.

4. The revisions are effective Jan. 1, 2019.
