4 healthcare price transparency tools

An array of consumer-facing tools are emerging to make healthcare pricing information more transparent.

Here are four healthcare price transparency tools, sorted alphabetically:

BuildMyBod
Columbus-based Ohio Surgery Center built a pricing tool for head and neck procedures that offers its patients a look at physician fees, operating room time, anesthesia fees, implants/hardware fees, postoperative supply fees and taxes.

CMS Procedure Price Lookup Tool
CMS launched a procedure price online tool that allows consumers to compare Medicare payments and copays for hospital outpatient departments and ASCs in November 2018.

Transpara Health
Transpara Health is a digital platform where providers submit self-pay healthcare pricing information that is then publicly displayed. The platform has information from 235 providers across the U.S.

Virginia Health Information Price Transparency Tool
After Virginia's legislature passed a law to increase healthcare transparency, the price transparency tool was born. The tool provides information on claims paid by health insurance carriers throughout the state. VHI edits, combines and aggregates claims data. VHI presents the median allowed amount per service by patient region and location type.
