Billing for critical care services — 3 things to remember

Some anesthesia providers are being asked to scale back on routine cases and instead assist with critically ill patients during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Anesthesia Business Consultants President and CEO Tony Mira.

Mr. Mira shared three reminders for billing critical care services:

1. For payment purposes, critical care is defined by a patient's condition — not his or her location.

2. There are two time-based codes for performing critical care services on a patient age 6 or older: 99291 (for the first 30 to 74 minutes) and +99292 (an add-on code for each additional 30 minutes).

3. Several critical care services are bundled, including pulse oximetry, gastric intubation and ventilator management.
