Hospitals dodge price transparency — for now

The Trump administration is holding off on implementing a rule that would require hospitals to disclose negotiated rates for medical services, Seeking Alpha reports.

The administration is seeking a less disjointed approach to the requirement; officials want insurers to be required to disclose negotiated prices as well, according to The Wall Street Journal.

An updated plan is expected to be released this quarter. Hospitals have indicated that they will sue to block the price transparency requirement because they consider negotiated rates to be contractual trade secrets.

Supporters of the mandate say it would drive down prices, but others say costs could rise if hospitals or physicians demand the same deals their competitors are getting.
