UnitedHealthcare extends Houston physicians' contract despite failed negotiations

Despite failed contract negotiations, Houston Methodist's employed physicians will remain in-network for UnitedHealthcare customers through May 31, Houston Business Journal reports.

Houston Methodist and UnitedHealth Group were unable to agree on contract terms before the Dec. 31, 2019, deadline. As a result, Methodist's hospitals and facilities were no longer covered under UnitedHealthcare's Medicare Advantage or employer-sponsored plans as of Jan. 1.

Houston Methodist's employed physicians were also supposed to be dropped from UnitedHealth's network, starting April 1. UnitedHealthcare extended its agreement with Houston Methodist physicians to ensure its beneficiaries could have uninterrupted healthcare access during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Minnetonka, Minn.-based insurer said in a statement to HBJ.
