Alan Braid, MD, a gynecologist at the San Antonio-based Alamo City Surgery Center, said he performed an abortion in violation of the six-week pregnancy threshold set by a recent Texas law.

He performed the abortion on Sept. 6, five days after the law took effect, according to a Sept. 18 Washington Post op-ed he wrote. The patient was in her first trimester, according to Dr. Briad.

"I have daughters, granddaughters and nieces. I believe abortion is an essential part of health care," Dr. Braid said in the op-ed. "I have spent the past 50 years treating and helping patients. I can't just sit back and watch us return to 1972."
