In 2020, ASCs will be eligible to receive Medicare payment for six CPT codes related to coronary intervention.
In the wake of this decision, National Cardiovascular Partners' Tony Lafata, chief development officer, and Kelly Bemis, RN, chief clinical officer, told Becker's ASC Review that surgery centers can ensure quality in three ways:
1. Establish highly specific policies and procedures regarding patient admission criteria and postoperative care.
2. Track data, analyze variances and examine complications to understand the quality of outpatient care and to form best practices.
3. Know the importance of physician credentialing. "Physician credentialing is key to quality. The credentialing process allows you to ensure that you have high-quality physicians performing the cases and providing care to the patients," Mr. Lafata and Ms. Bemis said in a joint statement.
