New Jersey ASC that exposed patients to HIV, hepatitis exposure may face another lawsuit

A judge in New Jersey will allow a class action lawsuit brought by around 400 patients against a Saddlebrook, N.J.-based surgery center that potentially exposed thousands of patients to HIV and hepatitis B and C, according to NJ.com.

Three things to know:

1. HealthPlus Surgery Center notified around 4,000 patients that the center had potentially exposed them to HIV, hepatitis B and C last year. The patients at risk underwent surgery at the center from January 2018 to Sept. 7, 2018.

2. The surgery center paid for the patients to have an initial blood test to determine whether they contracted any of the diseases they were potentially exposed to. The new lawsuit asks the center to fund a second test because it can take six months for the diseases appear on tests.

3. The current lawsuit does not request financial compensation for damages, but the patients could pursue that in the future.
