The impact of data breaches in June & July — 1 ASC affected

There were 30 breaches of 500 healthcare records or more reported to the Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights data breach portal in June, according to HIPAA Journal.

Three key details:

1. The Palisades Eye Surgery Center in Bethesda, Md., reported a data breach to HHS July 17. The center notified patients of a cyberattack resulting in unauthorized access to the personal information of 10 patients or prospective patients. The ASC notified patients and said it would re-examine its data security policies.

2. In June, the number of health records exposed by data breaches increased by 73.6 percent, with a total of 3,452,442 healthcare records exposed.

3. The largest breach in June was at Dominion Dental Services, headquartered in Arlington, Va., which affected 2,964,778 patients. An unauthorized individual had access to the company's systems for nearly nine years, according to the website Health IT Security.
