Wilmington, N.C.-based real estate developer Paul Loukas believes the current boom in the medical office building market will continue, spurred by national healthcare reform, WilmingtonBiz reports.

1. Unlike in the past, small physician groups are not expanding at the same rate they previously did, Mr. Loukas said.
2. Instead, health systems are acquiring private practices to address the uncertainty surrounding the national healthcare picture.
3. Wilmington (N.C.) Health is one such system that's expanding. The health system recently moved into 30,000 square feet of a newly developed 60,000-square-foot office park.
System COO Chris Bunch explained the move: "We typically try to anticipate our needs three to five years out. Several of our buildings were constructed with expansion plans already in mind, and we plan to fill those spaces with new physicians and services as the patient population and demand around these offices continues to grow."
