ASCs transforming from cottage industry to leading sector, report says — 5 takeaways

As the ASC sector matures, its growth is slowing and consolidation is ongoing, according to L.E.K. Consulting.

Five takeaways:

1. From 2004-10, the number of ASC facilities increased at a compound annual growth rate of 4 to 5 percent.

2. From 2010-15, the number of ASC operating rooms increased between 2 and 3 percent per year. Construction skewed toward larger facilities as existing facilities added ORs.

3. Forty-four percent of facilities in local markets have three or more ORs, compared to 5 percent in 2010.

4. Leading ASC management companies consolidated 5 percent of facilities between 2010 and 2015, holding 17 percent of total market share in 2015.

5. In an Executive Insights report, L.E.K. Consulting authors Bill Frack and Jeff Williamson concluded: "ASCs are maturing rapidly from a cottage industry to a leading sector in the transformation of healthcare. Expect continued growth and consolidation in the U.S. ASC market, as well as potentially significant growth internationally."
