9 cardiology updates to know

Cardiology procedures are rapidly migrating to the outpatient setting, and ASC leaders see the specialty as one of the biggest opportunities for growth.  

Here are nine updates in cardiology from the last month: 

1. The Heart & Vascular Institute of Alabama in Montgomery set aside its request to open an ASC for endovascular and cardiac catheterization procedures amid opposition from several hospitals.

2. Paul Gagne, MD, will serve as founder and lead physician of Vascular Care Connecticut's new location in Darien. 

3. Hospital outpatient departments are performing more cardiothoracic imaging than cardiology offices, according to a recent study published in Radiology: Cardiothoracic Imaging. 

4. Interventional cardiology is expected to have a deficit of 7,080 physicians by 2025, according Merritt Hawkins. Here are five stats to know. 

5. Two hospitals in Boston and Cleveland were ranked best in the world for cardiology and cardiac surgery, respectively, by Newsweek in its World's Best Specialized Hospitals 2022 list.

7. Evanston, Ill.-based NorthShore University HealthSystem received approval to build a 167,000-square-foot cardiovascular institute at its NorthShore Glenbrook Hospital campus in Glenview. 

8. Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids (Iowa) broke ground on a new heart center.

9. Warren, Ohio-based Trumbull Regional Medical Center opened a congestive heart failure clinic to improve patients' quality of life through education and treatment.
