10 GI physicians featured in June

Here are 10 gastroenterologists Becker's ASC Review profiled in June:

1. Benjamin Levy, MD, is the division head of gastroenterology and head of GI education at Chicago-based Mount Sinai Hospital. Dr. Levy sits on the patient care committee for the American College of Gastroenterology and was the recipient of the 2013 Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation visiting IBD fellowship at the University of Chicago.

2. Daniel Podolsky, MD, is president of Dallas-based University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, a position he's held since 2008. His previous positions include chief of gastroenterology at Massachusetts General Hospital, chief academic officer at Partners HealthCare System and Mallinckrodt professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, all based in Boston.

3. Steven Fleisher, MD, is chief of gastroenterology and director of interventional endoscopy at Baltimore-based Center for Digestive Disease at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. His expertise includes treating diseases of the pancreas and the diagnosis of colon cancer. He is a fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association.

4. Michele Alkalay, MD, is an assistant professor of pediatrics at Dallas-based UT Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Alkalay is founder and director of the celiac program at Children's Health Plano (Texas), a clinic that treats children living with celiac disease.

5. Naga P. Chalasani, MD, is chief of the gastroenterology and hepatology division at Indianapolis-based Indiana University School of Medicine. In his role, Dr. Chalasani leads a staff of 100, including 50 faculty physicians, 16 subspecialty fellows and three psychologists. He is also the associate dean for clinical research at the Indiana University School of Medicine.

6. Edward Lebovics, MD, is the chief of the gastroenterology and hepatobiliary disease division at the Valhalla, N.Y.-based Westchester Medical Center. Dr. Lebovics also serves as the Upham professor of gastroenterology and is the director of the Sarah C. Upham division of gastroenterology and hepatobiliary diseases at New York Medical College

7. Ivor Hill, MD, is section chief of gastroenterology at Columbus, Ohio-based Nationwide Children's Hospital. Dr. Hill is also director of the Nationwide Children's Hospital celiac disease center. He was previously the chair of the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition committee and was involved with developing the first evidence-based guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric celiac disease.

8. Barbara H. Jung, MD, is division chief of gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Jung's clinical focus includes the diagnosis and management of patients with Lynch and polyposis syndromes. She runs a clinical and tissue registry to study high-risk Gi cancers, as well as a lab studying colon cancer progression and metastasis.

9. Rosario Ligresti, MD, is chief of the gastroenterology division at Hackensack (N.J.) Meridian Health. Dr. Ligresti is a fellow of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and focuses his practice on using advanced interventional endoscopic techniques to diagnose and treat digestive cancers.

10. Nezam H. Afdhal, MD, is the chief of the division of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at the Boston-based Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Afdhal has worked at the hospital for 19 years and assumed his current role June 1. In addition to his responsibilities at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Dr. Afdhal is a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
