Colonoscopy detection rate not affected by sedation method

A study published in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy examined how different sedation methods affected colonoscopy quality.

Researchers reviewed files from 585 healthy average-risk patients who underwent a colonoscopy while either moderately or deeply sedated in 2015-16.

Researchers believed deep sedation would improve detection rates because anesthesia clinicians put patients under at a faster rate, giving clinicians more time to explore the colon.

Researchers found that adenoma and polyp detection rates did not differ between the deep and moderate sedation groups. The majority of colonoscopies use moderate sedation instead of deep sedation.
