The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and the Association for Bariatric Endoscopy released recommendations and guidance around endoscopic bariatric therapies.

What you should know:

1. The guidance relates to the training and privileging of physicians offering the procedures.

2. The documents offer advice to ensure physicians provide the highest quality of care when performing endoscopic bariatric therapies.

3. ABE has long been a leading voice on endoscopic bariatric therapies. The association teamed with ASGE to draft this most recent guidance.

Lead author Rahul Pannala, MD, commented on the guidance, "Only a small proportion of gastroenterologists currently treat obesity; however, given the burden of disease, there is an urgent need for greater involvement of physicians from multiple specialties, including gastroenterology, to be actively involved in the care of patients with obesity."
