FDA approves duodenoscope protecting device — 3 insights

The FDA approved GI Scientific's ScopeSeal Duodenoscope Protective Device, a device that protects the distal end of a duodenoscope during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography procedures.

What you should know:

1. The ScopeSeal is a single-use device designed for Olympus duodenoscopes. It is the only FDA-approved device that seals the elevator area of the scope and significantly reduces distal-end contamination.

2. Duodenoscopes are harder to reprocess because of the many small parts associated with the scope.

3. The FDA has urged medical companies to create fully disposable alternatives. GI Scientific's device aims to fight potential contamination by working to prevent cross-contamination to begin with.
