Florida Health Department bars gastroenterologist from seeing female patients

The Florida Department of Health placed an emergency restriction order on a gastroenterologist's medical license after he inappropriately touched a woman during an emergency room exam, according to the Miami Herald.

According to the Florida Department of Health, Subhash Gupta, MD, touched a patient's breasts without warning or a stethoscope after she came into the emergency room with a diagnosis of abdominal inflammation. He repeated the same exam on the woman two other times, according to the emergency restriction order. The health department said Dr. Gupta's exam was outside the scope of practice.

Under the restriction order, Dr. Gupta can't see female patients anymore. According to the Herald, Dr. Gupta previously was accused of performing an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy on a patient without her consent. Additionally, in 1993, Dr. Gupta was accused of providing inadequate medical care to seven patients and poor record keeping, the Herald said.
