Philadelphia researchers develop 3D modeling software for previously unviewable portion of colon

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia researchers have developed a 3D-imaging method that allows them to view the enteric nervous system, News-Medical.net reports.

What you should know:

1. The system is a part of the colon that was previously only visible through thin tissue slices.

2. The ENS regulates several bowel functions and controls blood flow. The 3D model will allow researchers expanded access to clinical information that was previously obscured, according to an article published in Gastroenterology.

3. Researchers used mouse and human colon tissues to develop their imaging method. They created 280 confocal Z-stacks and acquired quantitative data from 14 adult human colons without sectioning the tissue, a first. The images are now available in a public database.
