4 narrow-focus ASCs with quick turnover time

Here are four narrow-focus ambulatory surgery centers with efficient turnover times.

The Endo Center at Voorhees (N.J.). The surgery center aims for an average turnover time of six to seven minutes. According to ASC Administrator Andrew Weiss in a Becker's ASC Review article, turnover time is entirely dependent on ASC staff members' ability to work in tandem with one another.

"A well-trained staff is our number one driver," said Mr. Weiss. "We invest in training. We work to have our staff know our ways from the beginning, as opposed to retraining staff that learned at another center."

The center includes two operating rooms and four procedure rooms. Its medical staff is comprised of 19 physicians performing approximately 21,500 cases per year. It offers colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and upper endoscopy procedures.

MiVIP Surgery Centers (Los Angeles, Calif.). MiVIP Surgery Centers includes three ASC locations, based in California and Nevada. The ASCs are multispecialty, but specialize in robotic surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System, according to Kathy Oppenheimer, the operating room director of MiVIP Surgery Centers and runs all three of the centers.

"Turnover for robotic surgery cases is longer. You need to open more equipment, sterilize more arms and laparoscopes, all while preparing for cases. The number of personnel involved goes up too," she says. "It's simply more labor intensive than, for example, a hand case, in which the turnover could be closer to 10 minutes. However, with a procedure like a robot-assisted hysterectomy, the turnover time is closer to 40 minutes. The key is reducing the number of trays and instruments that need to be sterilized."

MiVIP Surgery Centers has locations in Tustin, Calif., Los Angeles and Las Vegas. It offers procedures in numerous specialties, such as orthopedics, podiatry, spine surgery, gastroenterology, ENT, general surgery, gynecology, pain management and urology.

St. Louis Eye Surgery and Laser Center (Des Peres, Mo.). The surgery center has fast turnover time for their billing process. Typically the center bills their cases within one week of the service date. On average, physicians at the center perform more than a 1,000 eye surgeries every month. It offers numerous procedures such as cataract removal, intraoccular lens implantation, corneal transplantation, laser surgery, retinal surgery and oculoplastic procedures.

Warm Springs Surgical Center (Las Vegas). Warm Springs Surgical Center is a single-specialty general surgery facility with one operating room. The center performs laparoscopic bariatric surgery, gastric bypass, gastric sleeve and revision procedures. On a busy day the center does six more cases and turns over the OR in five minutes or less. "Our techs pull the cases the night before and they are ready to be opened at the beginning of the case. We no longer use a surgical table. Our gurneys have been fabricated with rails to accommodate the arm boards and retractors that are needed for surgery," says administrator Kristyna Ferren. "And we perform the surgery right on the gurney. Since the surgeries are all laparoscopic, there is little to no bodily fluids outside of the body, there is no need to mop the floor (sometimes we do anyway). When the surgery is complete the arm boards are removed and the patient is wheeled to the recovery area and the next patient is brought in."
