4 ASC physicians involved in politics

Here are four ambulatory surgery center physicians who are involves in politics and advocacy.

Michel P. Gelinas, MD, provides care at Northwoods Surgery Center in Woodruff, Wis., and he has served on the board for the Association of Wisconsin Surgery Centers for several years. He worked with legislators and other physicians on the Wisconsin ASC tax issue and was instrumental in ensuring that the voice of Wisconsin ASCs was heard at the legislative level with regard to the issue.

At the Northwoods Surgery Center's open house in 2013, Dr. Gelinas was vocal about the high-quality and low-cost care that ASCs are able to provide. He was successful in ensuring the local and state representatives as well as community business owners that ASCs provide significant healthcare contributions to the communities they serve.

Dr. Gelinas is a board-certified ophthalmologist and his clinical interests include glaucoma, infections, visual loss and diabetic eye disease. He has expertise in cataract surgery, laser eye treatments and eyelid procedures. He earned his medical degree and completed his residency at University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver.

John S. Jachimiak, DPM, of Boulder (Colo.) Surgery Center, advocates for the ASC community through the Colorado Ambulatory Surgery Center Association and Ambulatory Surgery Center Association.

Dr. Jachimiak recently met with congressional representatives in Washington, D.C., to discuss with them the importance of ASCs and the quality care they provide. These meetings allowed for politicians to understand the nuances of the industry, the challenges ASCs face as well as the benefits they provide. For his work, CASCA has recognized him as an industry leader.

Dr. Jachimiak is a fellow of the American College of Foot & Ankle Surgeons as well as an associate of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine. He is board-certified and earned his doctor of podiatric medicine degree at College of Podiatric Medicine & Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa.

J. Carlos Roman, MD, is a partner and pain management physician with Meridian Surgical Partners' facility Central Arkansas Surgical Center in Russellville. He is the chairman of the Pain Management Review Committee of the Arkansas State Medical Board and has worked to increase awareness for regulations affecting prescription drugs.

Dr. Roman earned his medical degree at University of Arkansas College of Medicine in Little Rock and he completed his residency at Tulane University in New Orleans. He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists and Anesthesia Political Action Committee.

Kimberly Wood, MD, is co-chair of the ASC Quality Collaboration. She is also the founder of kmdWOOD, which provides consulting services to the ASC industry. She has participated in several collaborative and cooperative initiatives, including the ASC Advocacy Committee and the ASC Coalition.
