6 ASCs celebrating 25+ years

Here are six ambulatory surgery centers that were established more than 25 years ago.

Banner Health Phoenix Surgicenter (40 years). The surgery center, established in 1970, is the first freestanding, multispecialty surgery center in the country. It was rebuilt in 1993 and today, performs more than 800 procedures a month. It has held Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care accreditation for 35 years, ever since the organization's inception.

The center includes seven operating rooms, three endoscopy rooms, three overnight stay beds, 23 pre-and postoperative beds and chairs as well as a pain center. It provides care in numerous specialties, including ENT, gastroenterology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, gynecology, general surgery and podiatry.

Davis Ambulatory Surgical Center, Durham, N.C. (29 years). In 2010, the ASC celebrated its 25th anniversary. The first surgical cases were performed at center in 1985 and it has performed almost 130,000 surgical procedures since opening. The multispecialty surgery center includes 170 physicians credentialed to perform procedures in gynecology, plastic, urology, pain management, ophthalmology general surgery, endoscopy, otolaryngology, orthopedics, oral surgery and podiatry.
 
Madison Irving Surgery Center, Syracuse, N.Y. (27 years). Opened in 1987, the surgery center has served more than 120,000 patients. The very first surgery performed was a cataract procedure. The surgery center was Crouse Hospital's second outpatient surgery center. Crouse Hospital's combined inpatient, ambulatory and outpatient surgical volume is more than 18,000 procedures annually.

Saint Vincent Surgery Center, Erie, Pa (27 years). The surgery center turned 25 in 2012. It was the first freestanding ambulatory surgery center in Erie, Pa., and first ASC in western Pennsylvania when it opened. Since its inception, the center has served more than has treated 181,242 patients. The center includes 88 physicians credentialed to perform about 500 different surgical procedures on an average of 10,000 patients annually. The ASC also provides diagnostic testing services.

Valley Ambulatory Surgery Center, Charles, Ill. (27 years). The surgery center was established in 1987, and today routinely performs more than 750 different types of surgical procedures. The medical staff at the ASC includes more than 165 area surgeons and physicians providing care in a wide array of specialties, including ophthalmology, spine surgery, podiatry, urology, orthopedics, oral surgery, gastroenterology, neurology, gynecology and ENT. The center also includes a post-surgical recovery care center, Valley Medical Inn, allowing the center to provide overnight nursing and inpatient recovery care. The center's administrator is Deborah Lee Crook.

Oak Brook (Ill.) Surgical Centre (30). Founded in 1984 as DuPage SurgiCenter, it was the first independent multispecialty ASC in DuPage County and the first in the state of Illinois to do outpatient laparoscopically assisted vaginal hysterectomy, according to Alfonso del Granado, the center's compliance officer.

The center also helped produce the largest academically published series of laparoscopic incidental appendectomy, laparoscopic tubal reanostomosis and numerous other distinctions. The center has a surgical site infection rate of 0.5 per thousand, says Mr. Granado.
 
The 15,000-square-foot surgery center is accredited by The Joint Commission and managed by Oak Brook Medical Management. It includes five operating rooms and more than 100 physicians providing care in a number of specialties, including gastroenterology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, pain management, plastic surgery and urology.
