Aspen Surgery Center (Walnut Creek, Calif.). It includes six operating suites and two procedure rooms. It offers services in gastroenterology, podiatry, reconstructive surgery, gynecology, urology, ophthalmology and general surgery. The surgery center uses ISSIO Solutions' real-time tracking system to manage patient flow.

The physicians are under the direction of Jeffrey Whitman, MD, a recipient of the American Medical Association Physician's Recognition Award. He also currently serves as clinical correspondent for the American Academy of Ophthalmology. The surgery center uses a real-time locating system from Versus for patient tracking. "This helps track patients throughout the process so you know where the breakdowns of communication can be within your own staff," said Nikki Hurley, BSRN, MBA, COE, director of surgical services, in a Becker's ASC Review article. "If there is something holding them back in pre-op, the nursing staff can view that more readily and figure out how to make the process smoother. They can also deploy additional staff to help in real time, if necessary."

Northwest Michigan Surgery Center (Traverse City.). The 34,000-square-foot surgery center includes six operating rooms, four procedure rooms and more than 44 pre- and postoperative beds. Its medical staff includes 80 physicians and 43 anesthesia providers. It provides surgical services in gastroenterology, otolaryngology, podiatry, orthopedics, ophthalmology, urology and gynecology. Its hospital partner is St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne. The center uses the AmakaiSolutions Patient Tracking System. "It is a live system that allows the family waiting in the patient reception area to track the patient by their initials and a color grid through pre-op, OR and into PACU," said Pamela Ledger, RN, director of nursing at the center. "The system automatically tracks the patient in real time."

Verde Valley Ambulatory Surgery Center (Cottonwood, Ariz.). The surgery center partners with Verde Valley Medical Center, and it is situated on the medical center's campus. The freestanding center includes four operating rooms, and is accredited by CMS and the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care. It offers care in a wide array of specialties, including orthopedics, podiatry, urology, gynecology and general surgery. The center uses the Experior software program to track patient flow in real-time. This tool provides an ongoing report, in real-time, of where the patient is during the course of their admission. The center uses the software to track a number of fields to indicate the patient's location and status, such as time that the patient begins registration, time registration is completed and patient is ready for pre-op, time the patient is taken to pre op, time the patient is ready for the operating room, time the surgery begins, time surgery ends and then the patient's time in the post anesthesia care unit. The software also enables staff to enter the quality measure and G-codes required by Medicare as well as timeliness of antibiotics at time of incision. "This data is very useful to management, the quality improvement committee and to the peer review process," said Martha R. Colen, RN, administrator of the center.

"We use tracker boards in waiting rooms, and have received many positive comments on our patient satisfaction surveys regarding family members being kept informed through the boards."
