The American Academy of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery shared recommendations about the COVID-19 vaccine and potential allergic reactions in a Dec. 25 statement.
Five points:
1. People with common allergies aren't more likely than the general public to have a reaction to the mRNA vaccines.
2. The vaccine should be administered at a place where anaphylaxis can be recognized and treated.
3. Anyone who gets an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine should stay on-site for 15 to 30 minutes after getting the shot to monitor for a reaction.
4. Data on risk in those with a history of allergic reaction to other vaccines is limited and evolving.
5. Anyone who has a severe allergic reaction to the first dose of the vaccine shouldn't get the second one.
