Supply Chain Tip of the Week: Assess local opportunity for total joint replacements (TJR)

To build a business case for adding TJR procedures at your facility, you’ll want to assess the opportunity in several ways—including whether you have an appropriate patient population in your area, the strength of local competition, availability of TJR specialists and the regulatory environment.

Consider the following:

  • Patients: Are they leaving your area to get TJR? Can you keep them in your patient base by offering this service?
  • Demographics: What is the makeup of your local population (gender, age, income, etc.)? What are the growth projections for TJR in your region by age?
  • Location: Is your facility in an area where potential TJR candidates are concentrated? For example, are you located near a retirement community?
  • Competition: Do other ASCs in your area already offer TJR? What would your competitive advantage be over them?
