Biomedical Departments, Anesthesia Staff Can Maintain Anesthesia Machines, Equipment

Leaders from the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, who expressed disappointment at an article that asserted anesthesia machines can only be maintained and repaired by "highly qualified medical service companies," believe anesthesia machines can be maintained and repaired by in-house biomedical departments or anesthesia staff, according to a statement published in AORN Journal.

AAMI stated that even though it agrees preventive maintenance and services should be performed by qualified staff members, those services should not be restricted to service companies. In-house biomedical departments are often supplied with the same training and education that companies, such as GE/Datex-Ohmeda and Drager, make available to their own field engineers.

In-house biomedical departments are also sufficiently trained to provide education and training to anesthesia staff, thereby creating a teamwork effort for preventive maintenance and repair of anesthesia machines.
