With regulations proposed by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services to eliminate, within hospitals, physician supervision of advanced-practice nurses who specialize in anesthesia, Ervin Moss, MD, executive medical director of the New Jersey State Society of Anesthesiologists, is calling for support for two pieces of proposed legislation which would codify existing state regulations requiring the supervision in an op-ed column for The Times of Trenton.
The proposed pieces of legislation are A2268 and S2218 and are sponsored by Assemblyman Vincent Prieto (D-Secaucus) and Sen. Loretta Weinberg (D-Teaneck).
Dr. Moss also encourages readers to contact New Jersey State Commissioner of Health and Senior Services Poonam Alaigh, MD, to challenge the proposed regulations.
To date, 15 states have fully opted out of the federal requirement for physician supervision, with Colorado opting out for specific hospitals in September.
