Non-operating room anesthesia services are becoming a more common frustration for anesthesia practices, according to Anesthesia Business Consultants President and CEO Tony Mira.
Four things to know:
1. Non-OR anesthesia includes electrophysiology, interventional radiology, catheterization lab, CT and MRI procedures.
2. Non-OR anesthesia services pose two challenges: They are typically unscheduled or added on during the day, and they may occur in a variety of settings.
3. In most cases, hospitals' contracts with anesthesia groups don't include non-OR coverage.
4. Non-OR anesthesia cases have a big effect on anesthesia practices in terms of manpower and scheduling. For this reason, Mr. Mira advises practices to monitor any services provided outside the operating room.
