Penn Medicine implements opioid prescribing alerts in outpatient clinic's EMRs

Philadelphia-based Penn Medicine recently began notifying outpatient providers of best practices around opioid prescribing through EMR-based alerts, HealthData Management reports.

Penn Medicine implemented the alerts in all its outpatient practices in New Jersey to comply with a state law limiting opioid prescriptions.

With the alerts, providers are notified whenever a prescribing limit is reached. These alerts decrease overprescribing, according to research Penn Medicine conducted against its ambulatory practices in Pennsylvania that do not use alerts.
