Five states have advanced bills that would give advanced practice nurses and certified registered nurse anesthetists full practice authority.

What you should know:

1. Virgina: The state House passed a bill that would give CRNAs prescription authority and increase access to patient care.

2. West Virginia: A bill passed in a House committee that would remove physician supervision requirements, address liability around advanced practice providers and allow healthcare facilities to hire providers to staff their centers.

3. Ohio: The state House passed a bill that would better define the scope of practice around medications, treatments and diagnostic tests during the perioperative period. It would also remove restrictions on CRNAs providing anesthesia care.

4. Indiana: The state Senate passed a bill that deregulated the supervision of advanced practice nurses and expanded the types of physicians that can oversee advanced practice providers.

5. South Dakota: State Senatorspassed a bill to allow CRNAs to collaborate with podiatrists and dentists, and to grant them prescriptive authority.

South Carolina, Massachusetts and Florida are all also considering bills around full practice authority.
