3 strategies from The Joint Commission, AHRQ on how to make surgery in ASCs safer

The Joint Commission and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality outlined three ways ASCs can make surgery safer.

Here are the insights to know:

1. Hitting patient safety goals such as using medications safely, identifying patients correctly and preventing mistakes and infection are standards ASCs are required to comply with in order to receive accreditation.

2. Giving patients brochures that help prepare them for ambulatory surgery is an additional resource ASCs can use to help patients know what to expect before, during and after surgery.

3. Toolkits offering insight on patient engagement, clinical teamwork and communication from the AHRQ and The Joint Commission can help ASCs adhere to safety guides.
