4 things to know about The Joint Commission's opioid treatment program accreditation

Here are four things to know about The Joint Commission's opioid treatment program accreditation program requirements:

1. Medication storage, preparation and security are three things surveyors look for. Additionally, surveyors check if there is adequate staffing, and procedures used to assure proper ingestion and disposal of medication.

2. Goals and treatment planning must include sustained abstinence from drug use and addressing chronic health issues.

3. Opioid treatment programs should have a plan that shows the steps that must be taken to reduce the risk of medication diversion. The plan should be reviewed by leadership annually.

4. Surveys must be conducted every three years.
