Question: What did you do to prepare for MBSAQIP accreditation?
Kemal Erkan: In preparation to the MBSAQIP accreditation application, we first reviewed the standards of the accreditation. Upon reviewing and determining our readiness, we engaged key administrative team. We then conducted a thorough assessment of our center's policies and procedures and compared it with MBSAQIP's standards. After identifying variances, we developed policies and procedures to align with the standards. We educated staff members and kept them engaged with implementation and quality improvement programs. Fortunately, we have seasoned surgeons in the specialty and therefore, we were able to meet the program's caseload requirements. In addition, we have been part of an accountable healthcare organization, which made it facile. With the ACO, we have been providing team-based integrated care. We have a dedicated care coordination team. Care is delivered in a culturally competent and patient-centered manner.
Our commitment to our patients is to provide them with individualized care. Our current process allows us to accomplish this by conducting weekly case conferences wherein our clinical and administrative leadership team, care providers and care coordination team intricately review each case and ensure that patients are receiving quality care throughout the process.
Q: What tips do you have for other surgery centers looking to obtain this accreditation?
KE: Having the support of the leadership team, innovative infrastructure and staff engagement are integral to the success of the project.
Q: How does the accreditation help distinguish your facility?
KE: From the patient's standpoint, it bolsters confidence knowing that they are being handled by recognized surgeons under the accreditation program and that the procedure is being performed at a facility that has met the standards of a nationally recognized accrediting body. It also gives our organization leverage in negotiating contracts with health plans.
