3 things to know about CMS certification for surgery centers

In order to receive Medicare reimbursement and be certified by CMS, ASCs must comply with standards set by the federal agency.

Three things to know about those standards:

1. Documentation. CMS requires ASCs to document patient admissions and health and safety information, including infection control.

2. Record-keeping. CMS requires ASCs to store records securely. ASCs can use software to track and store patient records, maintenance records and physician credentialing records.

3. Rules compliance. When CMS changes rules for quality reporting, ASCs should pay attention to whether the rule was "removed" or "suspended." suspended means the rule may come back, and removed means it's gone for good. If a rule is suspended, ASCs should still track compliance.
