In an article published in AAPC's Coding Edge, Angela "Annie" Boynton, BS, RHIT, CPC, CPC-P, CPC-H, CPC-I, CCS, CCS-P, provides some best practices for organizations to prepare for ICD-10 1,000 days from its implementation date of Oct. 1, 2013.
Organizations need to be fully compliant with ICD-10 by Oct. 1, 2013, as CMS will reject any claim using ICD-9-CM codes with a date of service on or after this date.
Ms. Boynton's best practices include focusing on who should be on an organization's ICD-10 steering committee, taking advantage of available resources and the value of an impact assessment.
