Cigna in the headlines: 9 updates in 60 days

Cigna, the fourth-largest insurer in the U.S. by membership, has received accolades — and scrutiny — in the last two months. 

Here are nine updates on the company reported by Becker's since July 26: 

1. David Cordani, CEO of The Cigna Group, is the 13th highest-paid CEO in healthcare, earning $20.97 million per year. 

2. Cigna Healthcare removed prior authorization requirements from more than 600 medical codes — nearly 25 percent of services.

 3. Cigna was named to Forbes' 2023 list of "Best Employers by State." Cigna was among the top employers in Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee. 

4. Cigna is partnering with Virgin Pulse on an individualized digital health platform for 11 million members. The platform uses AI technology and behavioral science to allow members to track their mental, physical and social health.

5. Riverdale, Ga.-based Southern Regional Medical Center sued Cigna, alleging the payer did not fully reimburse SRMC for medically necessary services as an out-of-network provider. 

6. The Cigna Group is the 35th-largest company in the world by revenue, according to Fortune's "Global 500" list. 

7. The Cigna Group raised its year-end revenue projections to $190 billion and reported a 6 percent decrease in shareholders' net income, according to the company's second-quarter earnings report. Total revenues in the second quarter were $48.6 billion, up 7 percent year over year.

8. The Cigna Group was among 15 payers named to Fortune's list of the best employers for women. 

9. Cigna is facing a lawsuit alleging that it systematically rejects patient claims using an algorithm system.
