New technology has prompted CMS to reconsider its recently updated national coverage determination for MRI, according to an AAPC release.
Section 220.2 of the NCD Manual establishes MRI coverage for a number of uses, but aside from a few exceptions, MRI remains non-covered when certain patient-specific contraindications are present. These contraindications would include patients with implanted cardiac pacemakers.
A new pacemaker designed for use in an MRI environment has led CMS to reconsider its MRI NCD. Because the FDA approved the Medtronic Revo MRI SureScan pacing system a few days after the close of the public comment period for the recent reconsideration of the MRI NCD, CMS didn't have enough time to issue a final decision on the device before the due date.
The FDA has approved the Medtronic pacing system for use in an MRI environment under certain conditions. The reconsideration is limited to MRI and does not include any coverage determination about the device.
