Colorado Attorney General Will Assist With Health Insurance Exchange While Battling Federal Reform Law

The Colorado Attorney General's office will assist the group responsible for setting up a state health insurance exchange as it fights to undo the federal healthcare reform law that created the exchanges, according to a Pueblo Chieftain report.

The Colorado Health Benefits Exchange Board voted Friday to hire the attorney general's office for legal work surrounding the exchange's implementation. The office is currently partnering with more than 25 other state attorneys general in filing a lawsuit to challenge the constitutionality of the federal healthcare reform law.

The suit claims the federal government encroached on states' sovereignty and oppressed citizens' liberties by requiring individuals to purchase health insurance, according to the report. Last month, the U.S. Court of Appeals in the 11th Circuit upheld an earlier ruling that found the federal mandate unconstitutional. The ruling upheld other parts of the healthcare reform law.

Colorado Chief Deputy Attorney General Cynthia Coffman said the state attorney general's office is capable of advising the health exchange board while participating in the lawsuit.
