The Obama administration has awarded $21 million to help community health centers in Florida expand and serve 41,190 additional patients, according to a Sun-Sentinel report.
The Florida money was part of $728 million in grants nationwide given to create new centers or expand existing ones. Officials at the White House and HHS touted the spending to showcase the advantages of the new healthcare reform law, which has met criticism from many Republicans, including Florida Gov. Rick Scott.
Gov. Scott has turned down federal grants to implement the law, hoping the U.S. Supreme Court will declare it unconstitutional. Federal officials say the expansion of subsidized healthcare centers is necessary to serve low-income patients.
