Optum plans for continued hip, knee ASC volume growth

OptumHealth's network of providers and surgery centers is seeing strong outpatient surgery volumes, especially for hips, knees and senior services.

During a session at the Goldman Sachs 44th Annual Global Healthcare Conference June 12-15, UnitedHealth Group executives talked about recent healthcare trends and where their business is headed. The session included:

  • John Rex, Executive Vice President and CFO of UnitedHealth Group
  • Patrick Conway, MD, CEO of Care Solutions, Optum
  • Tim Noel, CEO of UnitedHealthcare Medicare and Retirement

The executives noted network ASCs, which are part of SCA Health, are reporting strong volumes and continue to work through backlogs from the COVID-19 pandemic. The acuity of care and cost per case hasn't increased, but the sheer number of cases is still meaningfully increasing.

SCA Health has more than 320 surgical facilities and 11,300 teammates. There are 9,200 physicians within the network serving 1.43 million patients each year.

UnitedHealth Group, which owns Optum, reported stock price dropped 9.3 percent after making comments about elective surgeries and behavioral health businesses at the event, according to BenefitsPro. UnitedHealthcare, the company's insurance business, anticipated volumes will remain high when building the 2024 health plans.
