Virginia Democrats Propose Health Insurance Exchange Bill to Ward Off Federal Intervention

Virginia House Democrats proposed a measure Tuesday to establish health insurance exchanges in the state, a system that would allow consumers to purchase affordable health coverage in an online marketplace, according to a Washington Post report.

Dels. Patrick Hope (D-Arlington) and Jennifer McClellan (D-Richmond) said at a press conference that the exchanges would let Virginia residents compare and contrast different plans. They said implementing the exchange as a state would prevent federal intervention, which would dictate how the plan operates.

Dels. Hope and McClellan said the bill is based on recommendations from Gov. Bob McDonnell's Virginia Health Reform Initiative, a panel created to implement healthcare reform in Virginia.
