Here are nine statistics on ASC outcomes from the ASC Association's Outcomes Monitoring Project 2nd Quarter 2010 Report, which saw ASCs in 44 states participating in the survey.
1. 76.4 percent of participating ASCs reported fewer than 1.5 post-surgical wound infections per 1,000 patient encounters.
2. The median rate of unscheduled direct transfers of reporting ASCs was .6 transfers per 1,000 patient encounters.
3. The average paid clinical hours (non-physician) per patient encounter was 9.1.
4. Nearly 60 percent of reporting ASCs had a days in accounts receivable of 35.4 days or less.
5. The median operating room time per patient encounter is 50.2 minutes.
6. 78.5 percent of reporting ASCs completed more than 90 percent of their medical records within 30 days.
7. 99.5 percent of ASCs use a patient satisfaction survey.
8. Infection rates by specialty (Average)
- Gastroenterology - 0.13 infections per 1,000 patient encounters
- Ophthalmology - 0.22 infections per 1,000 patient encounters
- Orthopedics – 1.25 infections per 1,000 patient encounters
9. Unexpected Complication Rates by Specialty (average)
- Gastroenterology – 1.45 complications per 1,000 patient encounters
- Ophthalmology – 2.81 complications per 1,000 patient encounters
- Orthopedics - 2.62 complications per 1,000 patient encounters
