Approximately 8,100 private practices were acquired by hospitals or corporations in 2022 and 2023, according to the Physicians Advocacy Institute's "Hospital and Corporate Acquisition of Physician Practices and Physician Employment" report, published in April.
In that same period, 19,100 physicians became employees of hospitals or other corporate entities, up 5.1% since 2022.
The number of hospital and corporate-owned entities is also up 6% since 2022.
Hospitals acquired 2,800 private practices and 16,300 physicians over the two-year period, increasing the number of hospital-owned practices by 7.3%.
Meanwhile, corporate entities acquired 5,300 private practices, but only 2,800 additional physicians, increasing the number of corporation-owned practices by 11%.
Since 2019, an additional 127,700 physicians are employed by hospitals or corporate entities.
